Writing English as a Second Language

Writing English as a second language is not the easiest thing in the world to do, however it can be mastered with a few simple techniques.

Increasing your vocabulary can be boring, but without an extensive vocabulary you will not have the words at your fingertips to be able to express what you want to say; this can be intensely frustrating.  So learn as many new words as you can, try to learn about 10 or 20 every day and learn them well, so that they come automatically to you when writing.  The more that you can increase your vocabulary the better it will be for you and your readers.

Learn the basic rules of grammar and do not think that grammar can be ignored.  It is very important, since anyone reading your work will be able to tell the level of your
understanding of the language as they read. If your grammar is poor they will quickly realise that you have a very low level of understanding.

All work should be self-checked.  It is easy to just write something down, but afterwards, before anyone else reads it ensure that you have read your work and edited it.  This can easily be done on a computer, so there really is no excuse for not checking to see that punctuation, grammar and syntax is correct.

Remember that mistakes are natural and are actually part of the learning process.  It is the mistake that offers you the chance to learn what you should not do and as such it should be viewed as an important tool in learning how to write good English.

Reading English, particularly that written by native speakers, can also greatly improve your written English, so to write effectively read as much as you can every day. Read anything that you can get your hands on, particularly quality newspapers.
