How Can ESL Students Improve Written English?

Students that are learning English as a second language may find that speaking the language comes easier than writing it. This is quite common for any language being learned. The properly written format can often be different from how it sounds, making it a challenge to grasp the written aspect. There are many ways that ESL students can improve their written English. A variety of software for English writing can increase the learning potential of someone struggling with the written requirements.  The availability of online grammar checkers and English punctuation checkers is also a huge benefit to those making their first attempts to write English.

Some of these grammar programs and various software types are available for free. This poses little risk. If the program does not meet the student’s instructional needs then it can simply be removed. Most software for English editing and writing comes at a charge. Check for free trials first to be sure it has all that is needed. Most professional software companies will allow a free trial period of up to one month in order to prove the success of their product. This can be helpful for ESL students living on a fixed budget.

Perhaps the best way to excel at writing in the English language is simply to do so. Creative writing of short stories is a fantastic way to encourage the imagination as well as increase learning. Keeping a personal journal written only in English is another great way to hone writing skills. Actively writing in English is the only way to gain a true understanding and appreciation for the language. ESL students will learn faster by doing than by watching.
